Hypercognition. | Control Immunity |
POWER DESCRIPTIONS
Hypercognition || Similar to Intuitive Aptitude, there are differences in that Hypercognition affects not only the learning of information but the recollection and analysis of such information. People say a person only uses a fraction of their brain at any given time. This is untrue. Your brain is a pathway of twisted synapses that electricity flows through to create "thought". Some synapses become nulled over time and close off, mainly known as desensitization-- but what would happen if you had access to every synapse in your brain at any time? What if they never closed off and every pathway was available for you to explore freely? This is Hypercognition in a nutshell. This isn't to say that users of this power are geniuses, far from it, but they exhibit traits like perfect recall, enhanced learning and pattern recognition. Basically what normal people do but to an extreme level to the point where he has near full control of his own brain.
Sub-traits of this power include:
-Accelerated Development/Thought Process [His thought processes are rapid and he is able to grasp new learning material unnaturally fast]
-Adoptive Muscle Memory [If he were to quickly type in a random string of thirty numbers on a keypad he would be able to recall based on muscle movement exactly which keys were pressed.]
-Enhanced Mental Capacity [The brain is able to preserve every pathway allowing him to recall all information already stored]
-Parallel Processing [Thoughts aren't always singular and linear, his mind can track multiple things at once making him seem rather distracted at times.]
Control Immunity || This power is the immunity to mind controlling effects known on this site as Mental Resistance. There are powers that target a person's mind causing them to think, feel, or act in a way that the attacker wants. The user of this power has full control over their brain that they are able to completely resist the effects of mental suggestion. There are several steps to this process known as the "Doorbell Method" (patent pending).
The Doorbell Method ||
1. Contact is initiated by the initiator.
2. Initial contact is established amd the initiator is met with a mental door. The initiator, by making contact, has already rung the doorbell alerting the target of his presence. The initiator now has a choice.
3a. The initiator solidifies the mental link with the target revealing identity and intent and can attempt to force the door open. This stage is a sub-conscious byproduct of the link established and with little effort from either end can be broken leading to...
3b. The initiator breaks the mental link before the target can identify the initiator or his intent.
4. Now it is the target's turn for a choice. The target can invite the initiator in or keep the initiator in a 'waiting room' where a connection is still maintained but no effect is taken. Or the target can simply end the connection with an aggressor.
*disclaimer* attempting to force the mental door of a regular person is what mind control is. The difference between a regular person and one with Control Immunity is that the door will be sealed shut until the target decides what to do about the initiator. As a default the subconscious mind will invite any foreign mind into the waiting room for the conscious mind to make the final decision when able.

APPEARANCE
Brown, wavy hair. Green, piercing eyes. Stands a good six feet from toe to head and has a lanky build. He obviously doesn't play sports or anything, but he isn't weak either. Just a normal person until stamina is called into question. He can't run for very long. It's just not something he does well. He does, however, enjoy playing with the hair that falls just above the bridge of his nose, especially when contemplating. He enjoys more comfortable clothes over the mandated school uniform he's required to wear. At least they allow him different colors..? mixing and matching would have been more his style but he was disciplined the first day because of that failed idea. Normally he'd be a hoodie and jeans kind of guy, the perfect combo for exploring or just generally being out and about. Comfortable and ready for all sorts of weather.
PERSONALITY
Hyperactive would be the first word that comes to mind. He is spontaneous and kind of annoying in a lovable kind of way-- at times. Other times you just want to give him a punch in his smug face. Did I mention he's a know-it-all? He'll correct you if you're wrong, be sure of that. Having a beautiful mind makes him believe he is a beautiful thing and has a vain view of himself, prideful, assertive and confident in what he has to say like everything he says drips with gold... Then again, he doesn't actually take himself too seriously and the only gold spewing from his mouth most times is comedic gold! Ba-dum!
He is too smart for his own good to be honest. Give a guy hypercognition and it goes to his head! He is creative and adaptive able to improvise on the spot much like anyone else... with the only difference being he is able to go through numerous scenarios to pick out the appropriate path in his improvisation. He can be rather childish and petty a bad loser in every sense. Speaking of sense, he is a nazi about what is considered 'common sense' and makes a big deal about things not needing to be spoken-- more because he's a little bad with thinking of words on the spot. Language in all its forms is kind of a weakness of his. He can speak any language he studies and he'll always struggle when trying to pick out which words he actually wants to use.
To friends he is incredibly loyal. To enemies he is a plague. To allies he is supportive. To family he is loving. To teachers he is lazy. He often only half pays attention in class, completing assignments as he halfheartedly listens to the lecture of the day. He used to be called on often to make sure he was actually listening, but his correct answers in the face of his split attention caused more than one teacher's hair to turn gray. Above all, Sherman enjoys fun. He's a prankster who twists words for his own amusement. Perhaps because people are offset by his normal all-knowing personality he has developed an 'oblivious' side to make himself seem more relate-able.
As a final note, Sherman is a little... eccentric. He has the feeling that he is constantly being watched. Oh, not by actual people or anything, but by extra-dimensional beings omnipotently intruding on every facet of his life. But that's absurd, right?! right..? He offhandedly makes comments to these entities and thinks silently to them from time to time more out of irony than anything else. I mean, really. If he were to actually believe in such a thing he'd be certifiably insane!

Writing and drawing a cult hit like Panda-man was the highlight of Sherman's middle-school days. Writing under the alias of A. E. Ward, the young Sherman Harper made a name for himself as an acclaimed writer and artist. Often, people would comment on how clean the comics looked as if they expected a computer to have created it. Well, they ran the artwork through a computer to color and put in the line work... but everything else had been done by hand, all the way down to the text boxes. He was accomplished, famous if it ever got out that he was A. E. Ward-- so why did he feel so trapped? Bennington, Vermont might have been the answer. Trapped between the Green Mountain and the border of New York, Sherman was isolated in a way from the rest of the world. His family didn't believe in TV or internet access. Such things were frivolous and not necessary.
His parents loved him and wanted what was best for him, but they couldn't afford the luxuries in life. They lived in simple accommodations with little in the way of possessions. Most times he'd find himself in the Blue Benn, a diner just off North Street. It was small, but what caught his eye was a TV hanging off the wall at an angle. Really, it was the only medium of information he had to go by. The owner kept the station set to CNN, not that he minded, Sherman enjoyed watching the news. Stories were often sad and controversial. The young boy identified it as a ploy to attain viewers and spark conversation which would be a free form of publicity for the station. The one topic that caught the young boy's eyes was the emergence of meta-humans in society. These often time young children would be taken in and raised by a program that turned these metas into working citizens and benefactors of society.
Not everyone agreed with how things were going. Normal people were scared. What if a meta was living next door and they didn't know until it was too late? How many people were acting under the influence of metas without realizing it? People were scared of what they didn't understand and in turn grew angry. Sherman used their uncertainty as a medium to channel his character Panda-man through. Such an adorable creature couldn't be called scary, despite whatever the man underneath looked like. Perhaps it was an intentional connection from how innocent some metas looked but were quite dangerous underneath. Or maybe it was to say that what lay underneath was only amplified by the choice of animal the protagonist chose to use. Every detail of the comic was meticulously thought out and turned into satire. People debated on the points the comic presented and A. E. Ward started to have sway in the public opinion of metas and how people reacted to them. Not only was the panda costume and scenarios popular among children, but even teens loved the comedy and adults enjoyed the real issues the comics brought to light.
How was it, then, that Sherman Harper would be recruited into a school for meta-humans? He didn't have any powers, he was just a normal middle-school boy, right? As the author of Panda-man he had plenty of admirers, but among the meta-human community there were some that disliked his approach at covering such a serious matter and turning it into a farce. One man in particular who was gifted at invading the minds of others and stripping them of information found it particularly simple to track down the unsuspecting Sherman Harper. After all, he was sure that no one could find out his secret. This man, let's call him Simon, lead the trail of bread crumbs all the way to the office that accepted the Panda-man drafts and stripped the information of Sherman from his editor-- the only one who knew his secret.
Was it any surprise, then that one night Simon forced his way into Sherman's house with a gun? Two cracks of the pistol later and two bodies lay on the ground. Sherman's was next. All he heard were the heavy footsteps and the ragged breathing of the man who murdered his family in cold blood. They stood face to face, the pistol aimed at Sherman. But it wasn't really Sherman the man was pointing the pistol at. It was an idea he had planted in his head, that Panda-man had put a light-hearted twist on a serious subject and touched the hearts of many normal humans changing their perspectives in a more positive way. People were asking themselves dangerous questions like if they could really live with metas in their midst. In his area, no. Humans had reached the conclusion that they couldn't and began a meta hunt. They wanted to cleanse the area of all metas and it had been Sherman's fault. Sherman's fault that his wife and daughter... There was no way Simon could forgive this bastard! It was the tears that Sherman exploited. Simon had blurry vision and needed to blink them out of his eyes. It was a split second's worth of time, but in the dark it was enough. What came next Sherman doesn't talk about, but at the end of it he was wrapped in a blanket with blue and red lights dancing around him, trained professionals asking him meaningless questions that rang hollow in his ears.
It was his fault. Everything... it was all his fault...
Weeks later Sherman moved from his home down to a special school for metas. Simon had talked, told them that he had tried to strip everything from Sherman before killing him, but for some reason it hadn't worked. Sherman was a meta that defied the control of metas. At least, that was the official paperwork. Panda-man had been put on hiatus until an indeterminate time, his project of passion put on the back burner. The mode by which all this destruction was delivered. Maybe he wouldn't write again. Maybe he'd just disappear. Maybe this feeling of wrenching guilt would go away.
